How to Measure Your Head

Hat Size Guide

Many of the headpieces available from the House of Balsam Millinery are fascinators or small, easy to wear buttons or pieces that are held in place with either a comb, small pinning loops or an elastic and will fit all head sizes.
However, if size is important, or if you are having a bespoke hat created just for you, then your head size is of particular importance. At the House of Balsam Millinery we have a selection of head sizes to choose from. Each piece is made individually so we can size hats to fit on request.
How to measure your head
If you are able to visit the Studio, Jenny will measure your head size for you. However, if that is not possible, here are directions for you to take you head measurement.

How to Measure Your Head

Head SizeTo ensure that your hat that is going to be especially made just for you is the correct fit you must take three (3) measurements.

  • Front to back, which is taken from the hairline at the front to just under the “bulge” at the back
  • Side to side, from above the ear across the top of the head to the top of the other ear
  • Circumference, around the fullest part of the head

head-size-2Take a measuring tape and place it around the circumference of the head, slightly above the eyebrows and ears. Wrap tape gently around head making certain tape lies on the little bump on the back of your head. The tape should feel comfortable, not too tight and not too loose, just the way you want the hat to fit. If you can get two fingers between the tape and your head, this should be a comfortable size for you.

If your measurement falls between sizes it is wise to choose the larger measurement.
